Murrysille, PA (May 7, 2015) The 2015 tournament season continued on May 1-3, at the South Hills Tournament at South Hills Dek Hockey in Jefferson Hills, PA. Murrysville Dek Hockey was again well represented as all three teams advanced to at least the semi-finals in their respective divisions with the Beaver team reaching the finals and the Penguin team winning the championship.
It was another dominating weekend for the Murrysville Penguin Tournament Team as they rolled through the round robin portion of the tournament with 8-0 wins over South Hills, Riverview, and Butler. Heading into the playoffs as the #1 seed, Dave Bigenho’s team took down the South Hills team 3-0 in the semi’s and rolled to a 7-0 over Riverview in the Championship game to win their second straight tournament of the young season and post a 9-1 record through the first two tournaments.
On the heels of a semi-final appearance at the Midwest Regionals in April, the Beaver Tournament Team had high hopes heading into the South Hills tournament and got off to a hot start with 8-0 wins over South Hills in their opener and Riverview in their second game but hit a road block during their third game as they lost to the Team Pitt Dragons 1-0 leaving them as the #2 seed heading into the playoffs. The Beaver team wasted no time in the semi’s taking down Riverview 7-0 to give them another shot at the Team Pitt Dragons in the Finals. After a closely contested final, so close in fact that the game went to overtime without a winner and was forced into a shootout. Team Pitt scored on their first two opportunities while Murrysville missed their first two shots giving Team Pitt the 2-1 victory.
The talented but young Murrysville Cadet Tournament Team went winless at the Midwest Regionals but learned valuable lessons that would pay dividends in the South Hills Tournament. Up first for the Cadet team was Purple Power, Murrysville jumped out to a 2-0 lead but were unable to hold the lead and lost 3-2. In their second game they played a very fast and skilled Team Pitt Reapers team in a very tight game but came up short again in a 2-1 loss. In their final round robin game they played South Hills to a 1-1 tie which gave them the #5 seed and a spot in the quarter finals against the same South Hills team. Murrysville would prevail in their rematch with South Hills with a 1-0 win to send them to the semi-finals against the #1 seed Purple Power. Unfortunately the Murrysville Cadet team got down early to the eventual champions and lost 3-0.
