Murrysville Penguin and Beaver Tournament Teams Claim Butler Invitational Titles
Murrysville, PA (June 17, 2015)
The Murrysville Dek Hockey Tournament Teams continued with their busy tournament schedule with a trip to the Butler Invitational at the Family Sports Center in Butler, PA hosted by Butler Storm Dek Hockey. With all three teams in attendance, Murrysville was well represented and again played some of the best teams in the region. The tournament was highlighted by not one, but two Butler Invitational championships. Both Penguin and Beaver teams went undefeated on their way to tournament titles.
The weekend started off on Friday night for the Murrysville Avengers Penguin division team with an 8-0 win over the Team Pittsburgh Sharks. After a one game break, they put up another score of 8-0 in their win over the Butler Storm. The penguin team closed out round robin play with a 6-0 win over the South Hills Invaders giving them the #1 seed heading into Sunday’s playoffs and setting them up with a rematch with the South Hills Invaders. The Invaders were no match for the MDH Avengers as they went on to win 6-0 and reach the finals of their fourth straight tournament. In the finals, MDH faced the only Penguin team they’ve lost to in the 2015 tournament season, the Team Pittsburgh Warriors. The Avengers went on to win by a score of 5-2 and claim their third tournament championship of the year.
The Murrysville Avengers Beaver opened their Butler Invitational with a matchup against one of their rivals, the Team Pittsburgh Dragons. The game was not for the faint of heart as it was a back and forth affair with the MDH Avengers coming out on top by a score of 4-3. The Beaver team went on to win over the Latrobe Dek Kats 5-1 and the Riverview Raptors 8-1 to wrap up the number one seed and play the Riverview Raptors again in the semifinals. A 5-0 win over Riverview put the Beaver Avengers in the finals of their third straight tournament against none other than the Team Pittsburgh Dragons. This time it was the Murrysville team that dominated the play to capture their second tournament championship in a row by a score of 5-2.
For the Murrysville Avengers Cadet team, they are a team that is still trying to find its identity. They are playing very well but still having trouble finding the back of the net when it counts. The Cadet team opened with a very strong performance against the Riverview Raptors but fell short 2-1. After beating a very young Penn Hills Malitia 7-1 they faced the Latrobe Dek Kats, the team that knocked them out of the Penn Hills tournament a few weeks prior. The MDH Avengers got up early and led by a score of 3-1 with less than five minutes remaining. Unfortunately Murrysville could not hold the lead and lost in a shootout. The Cadet team was slated to play the Butler Storm in the tier 2 semifinals on Sunday night but heavy storms flooded the benches and water began seeping through the rinks surface making the surface unplayable. The cadet playoffs were postponed until June 27.
Congratulations to both Murrysville Penguin and Beaver teams on their Tournament Championships!
